MISSION: Jose Manuel Gonzales: Apache Mayor of San José

Jose Manuel Gonzales was a poblador/settler and the second alcalde/mayor of San Jose, California from 1785 to 1789. Considering the fact that he was Apache Indian and given the rigid caste system during the Spanish colonial era, his political accomplishments were extraordinary. In this talk, author Arturo Villarreal elucidates the oft-forgotten social and political role of indigenous people in New Spain.

Arturo Villarreal is a San Jose native with roos in Del Rio, Texas. Along with Nannette Regua, Arturo is co-author of the book, "Mexicans in San Jose." Currently, he teachers Ethnic Studies and Anthropology at Evergreen Valley College.
