Time Element

Important rules related to presenting time of events (AP: Time Element):

  • Days of the week: Unlike AP style, provide the day and date for events, even if they are within seven days of the communication. "An estimated 50,000 visitors are expected to attend the City of Santa Clara Art and Wine Festival on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15." Include the year when there are legal posting requirements.
  • Months: When a month is used with a specific date, abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov., and Dec. The other months are never abbreviated. In some cases, when there is doubt that the audience will understand the abbreviation, long month names may be spelled out. Spell out all month names when using alone or with a year alone. (AP: Months)
  • No ordinal endings: May 24, not May 24th; Nov. 2, not Nov. 2nd; Jan. 31, not Jan. 31st
  • Times: Times are rendered without the ":00." Go lowercase, with periods for the "a.m." and the "p.m." Generally, use dashes without spaces, not "to" and "from." (AP, Times)
