Ancestors of many U.S. residents immigrated first to Canada – spending several years or even a generation there. Ancestors may have homesteaded in Canada or visited Canada on a regular basis because extended family lived there. Your ancestors may have been born in Canada and later moved to the US. You may even have loyalists as well as patriot ancestors!
Canada didn’t become an independent country until 1931 – much later than the U.S. It became a dominion in 1867 and gradually more provinces joined the dominion and later the country of Canada. Newfoundland did not join the union until 1949. This talk will examine Canadian national and provincial records to help you document time your ancestors spent in the provinces of Canada.
Christine Bell Green has a professional learning certificate in Genealogical Studies from the University of Toronto. She is a ProGen graduate and an alumnus of the Salt Lake Institute, the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research, and the Genealogy Research Institute of Pittsburgh where she studied advanced genealogy and advanced DNA analysis. She is a past president and current seminar chair of SMCGS and a professional researcher who teaches genealogy in Palo Alto and Mountain View/Los Altos Adult Schools. She gives genealogy talks to societies and groups throughout the San Francisco Bay area. In her spare time, she travels to visit her living relatives.
