This program will be presented by Judge Paul Bernal, Official Historian of San Jose and Superior Court Judge.
Judge Paul Bernal will share unexpected facts about the Anza Expedition of 1776, when a small party of soldiers traveled from Tubac, in present day New Mexico, to Monterey in Alta California. The men, under the authority of the Viceroy of Mexico were looking for an overland passage to what is now Northern California.
He will tell us who would join such an expedition, what life was like for them, and how they managed after arriving. You will learn about the Bernals, Bernal Road and other early settlers.
Paul Bernal is a Superior Court Judge presiding over jury trials. He teaches history at Santa Clara University and presents history at San Jose State University. An eighth generation Californian, he is the Official Historian of the City of San Jose and has been for 22 years. He has extensive experience as a leader of various local history societies.
