You may have heard that the 1890 U.S. Census was destroyed by fire, but that's not the whole story. Using contemporary sources and some focused research, Maggie will unravel the true story with details you've probably never heard before. We’ll look into the causes of the records destruction, what was actually lost, what wasn't lost, and what's available to replace the lost records. Maggie will also debunk some common myths about the 1890 census. A very detailed handout will be provided to all attendees.
Margaret is the blog editor and research coordinator for the San Mateo County Genealogical Society. She teaches a genealogy class in Menlo Park which emphasizes collaborative investigation.
