Lick Observatory is an important research unit of the University of California, providing state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers from all nine UC astronomy campuses. Opened in 1888 as part of the legacy of James Lick, it is the world’s first high-altitude astronomical observatory. Its mission is to support astronomical research and improve science education.
Dr. Paul Lynam will share with us the history of how Lick Observatory came to be built on the summit of Mount Hamilton and some of the important astronomical breakthroughs associated with Lick.
Dr. Lynam is an astronomer at Lick Observatory. An amateur astronomer since childhood, Paul has traveled worldwide to work with cutting-edge observatories. Educated in the UK, he received his Ph.D. in 2000 and has worked at observatories in Germany and Chile. He joined Lick Observatory in 2011 and is a regular contributor to teaching and public outreach activities as he continues his career at Lick.
